September

September rolled around in Tacoma and you know what that means: harvest time!

This year, we had a different type of apple tree at the curran apple orchard. Instead of McIntosh apples which were late bloomers and kind of small, we had Gravensteins. We scoped out the tree one week before the slated harvest date (9/11/11) and here’s what they looked like!
 Beautiful right?

Well, there definitely were some beautiful ones like this but there weren’t very many of them (we think maybe deer thought they were beautiful too).
Tom and I braved the heights of the tree branches and harvested every last apple off of the tree.
This is how many we ended up with:

Kind of a poor harvest, but they were delicious. As a bonus, we got a few other varieties as well (not pictured).

Tonight it smelled like Fall in the Glassman house as the aroma of fresh baked pie and homemade applesauce filled the air!

Also, I just wanted to show off the fruits of my labor in the garden. Unfortunately it was not actually fruit (or vegetables for that matter). We had a rough summer so I got a bunch of beans and snap peas but did not get a single zucchini this year :(. But, I did get a bounty of gorgeous flowers, thanks in part to my mom for growing some starts in her green house and some in part to the birds who re-planted some of the sunflowers from last year.
